The FONA Forum 2024 took place from October 9th to 11th, 2024 at the Futurium Berlin under the motto “Researching together. Shaping sustainability. Strengthen cohesion.” This important event is organized by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the “Research for Sustainability” (FONA) funding initiative. Around 230 actors from science, business, politics and civil society came together to discuss central topics in sustainability research and develop approaches to solutions.

The aim of the forum was to promote exchange about the impact and contribution of research to social transformation. Through fluid dialogue and networked thinking, new ideas for the further development of central sustainability topics were developed. Instead of traditional lectures, the focus was on interactive group discussions, which were accompanied by impulses from the plenary session.

The core concerns of the forum included:

  • Research as a changemaker for climate, resource and species protection
  • Research in times of multiple crises
  • Global climate protection and paths to climate neutrality
  • Sustainability and the role of finance

food4future, agricultural systems of the future, from the Leibniz Institute for Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ) was actively involved. Our experts, including Prof. Dr. Monika Schreiner, participated intensively in the discussions in order to help shape the future of sustainable agricultural systems. The focus was on exchanging knowledge and developing new ideas for innovative and sustainable agricultural concepts.
