The event took place as part of the course “Trends in Biotechnology” in the Master's program “Molecular Biotechnology” under the direction of Prof. Dr. Claudia Grewe.

Contents of the double lecture:

Definition and diversity:

  • Introduction to the diversity, ecology and cultivation of different macroalgae species.
  • Overview of industrial applications and uses.
  • Presentation of multilingual algae books and traditional herbarium specimens.

Use and cultivation:

  • Insights into 19 years of hands-on algae research by Dr. Fricke.
  • Presentation of the food4future project, consortium of the agricultural systems of the future, and current macroalgae work at the IGZ.
  • Presentation of various algae products to get to know.

The first part of the lecture was spiced up with the interactive use of AI to generate algae images. At the end of the second part of the lecture, various algae products were also presented for students to get to know. The students received a comprehensive macroalgae package, which met with a positive response and offered an exciting insight into the future of this promising resource.
