Dr. Oliver Schlüter (Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy) and Dr. Anna Fricke (Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops) spoke about the potential of macroalgae as a sustainable food source and innovative concepts for climate-resilient agriculture. The following topics were discussed under the title “Macroalgae - Alternative Food Source of the Future”:
- Macroalgae as an alternative food source
- Diversity and cultivation of macroalgae
- Innovative processing of algae biomass
- Integrative urban cultivation - the food4future approach
- Insights into current research projects such as food4futureII & NaFuVer
- Preview of the Insecta+ conference
FRUIT LOGISTICA 2025 once again proved how crucial innovation is for a sustainable future of food production. The comprehensive program provided a platform for leading scientists, companies and industry experts to discuss forward-looking solutions - from sustainable packaging to smart greenhouse technology. There was a particular focus on the role of macroalgae as the environmentally friendly protein source of the future. They grow quickly, do not require agricultural land and can be integrated into urban aquacultures - an exciting approach to sustainable food security.
