Potsdam, March 31 / April 1, 2025 - Two intensive days, many strong impulses and a clear goal: to pave the way for sustainable agricultural and food systems. At the industry transfer workshop of the Agricultural Systems of the Future funding line, food4future - Food of the Future presented itself with its own workshop, innovative exhibits and culinary highlights.

A powerful stage for the future of food: After the opening by Prof. Dr. Monika Schreiner (Co-Head of the Coordination Office of Agricultural Systems of the Future and Coordinator of food4future), Wolfram Rosenbach (AIP) and Claudia Müller (Parliamentary State Secretary, BMBF and BMEL), a stage dialogue followed. Under the title “From vision to implementation”, representatives from politics, business and science discussed key issues relating to the transformation of food systems. Afterwards, guests were able to navigate through the diversity of the participating consortia during a guided exhibit tour. food4future was represented with several stations: including an LED module for urban algae cultivation, an interactive algae app, a jellyfish aquarium and the paternoster cultivation system made of lightweight modules - all of which provided exciting insights into future production methods for alternative food sources.

Taste of the future: The food4future tasting: Another highlight was the accompanying food tasting, where healthy and delicious products could be experienced first-hand. Visitors were able to taste products such as algae ice cream from Eskil Puhl (Head of Convenience GmbH), jellyfish salad with samphire, spirulina chlorella and dulse cookies and spirulina cupcakes, samphire pesto and samphire wild garlic pesto, smoked African predatory catfish (CUBES Circle) and vegetable, fruit and berry potato chips (ELEA Technology GmbH)

The innovative dishes impressively demonstrated how sustainable and enjoyable the food of tomorrow can be, even today.

food4future workshop: “Lab2Launch”: On the evening of the first day of the event, food4future hosted the workshop “Lab2Launch - rethinking food and food production”. Here, everything revolved around the transfer of research into practice. Eight corporate partners presented their perspectives on innovative food systems in dialog with representatives of the project:

Jellyfish | Convenience GmbH | Hermetia Baruth GmbH
Silicann Systems GmbH | Elea Technology GmbH
Saarow Therme | Algenland UG
The focus was on questions of technological scaling, regulatory challenges, possible market potential and social acceptance. In business talks and various thematic working groups, the participants developed concrete solutions that are now being incorporated into the further development of food4future.

The second day also brought new impetus: the workshops of other AdZ projects - such as CUBES Circle, SUSKULT, DAKIS and NOcsPS - focused on topics such as the circular economy, peri-urban farming and sustainable consumption. Hendrik Schneider (ZALF) provided particular food for thought with his presentation “AI changes everything - science communication at a turning point”. The role of artificial intelligence in dealing with knowledge, the public and research was not only inspiring, but also opened up new perspectives for science and society.

Dr. Thomas Weith officially concluded the event by summarizing key findings and drawing attention to the next joint steps - with a clear appeal for further networking between research, business and society. Our heartfelt thanks go to all those involved in front of and behind the scenes - Monika Schreiner, Thomas Weith, Stefanie Fleischmann, Ejiau Hassen, Susann Pophal, Jette Behrend, Lena Jacobi, Andrea Maikath as well as the entire organization team and the many committed partners from science and practice. We are taking many new ideas with us - and look forward to the next steps in the implementation of our vision.
