Macroalgae at the Emden Film Festival - film and food
food4future scientist Dr. Anna Fricke at the 35th International Film Festival in Emden
16.06.2025
Set against the spectacular natural backdrop of British Columbia, the Focus Future Award-winning documentary by Blake McWilliam tells the story of seaweed enthusiast Frances Ward, who wants to set up her own kelp (Saccharina latissima) farm on the west coast of Canada and learns about the complexity and importance of this sea vegetable in the process.
Accompanied by culinary seaweed snacks, created by the students of the Department of Ecotrophology and Nutrition of the BBS II (Vocational Schools II) in Emden, Anna Fricke, together with Dr. Tim Staufenberger (Kieler Meeresfarm) and moderated by festival director Edzard Wagenaar, was able to answer the audience's questions on the topic of macroalgae cultivation and use and also put the local seaweeds - freshly collected on the Emden coast - in the spotlight.
At the end of the very varied event day, Anna Fricke was able to talk about the diversity and variety of macroalgae in science and life as a guest at the midnight talk Theesen's Tresen, in the company of various stars of the festival day Leela Scherbaum (“Bühne frei fürs Leben”), Jan Eilhardt (“Janine zieht aufs Land”) and the singer Kira Bermhard von der Zee, under the topic “What is normal in the film industry”.
