The Future Food Living Lab brings the food4future research project to life on the Wilhelminenhof campus, making it tangible and accessible to everyone. At various stations across the campus, spaces are being created where, for example, edible algae are cultivated or alternative foods are prepared in a Future Food Kitchen.
The AR Campus Tour connects these physical locations with digital, interactive content. The goal is to provide visitors with intuitive navigation and a playful introduction to the topics of sustainable nutrition and future food production.
As part of a semester-long project by students in the International Media Informatics program at HTW Berlin, a web application for mobile devices is being developed to show interested users where activities are taking place on campus or where exhibits on the topic of future food production can be found. Through engaging and personalized content, the Reallabor’s offerings are made more appealing, encouraging users to take advantage of them. Augmented reality is used as a technology to overlay virtual information directly onto the real-world environment of users located on campus. A virtual tour guide leads users around the campus and explains what there is to see and do at each stop.
To keep the barrier to entry as low as possible for potential users, the application is designed to run directly in the mobile device’s browser. This means that users do not need to wear augmented reality glasses or install an app on their smartphone.
